Buenos Aires, October 3 (NA) — President Javier Milei celebrated this Saturday the confirmation of the exit of the American giant Halliburton Company, which will not provide services for the Sea Lion project nor will it participate in hydrocarbon exploration in the Falkland Islands / Malvinas and their surrounding areas.
According to the text posted on his Instagram account, the oil company’s decision is «the result of work by the Secretariat of Legal and Technical Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.»
The multinational Halliburton notified its exit following warnings from the Argentine government regarding the illegality of operating in the sovereignty-disputed zone. The firm admitted that the authorities in Buenos Aires had raised serious questions regarding compliance with local laws for companies choosing to operate in the islands.
The withdrawal of the North American company coincides with a strong legislative offensive by the Casa Rosada.
In September, Milei presented a bill to severely toughen sanctions against firms operating illegally in the Malvinas, a strategy that raises tension with the United Kingdom but is already generating a deterrent impact in the international private sector.
The dispute is no minor matter: the Sea Lion offshore field, located 225 kilometers north of the islands and rejected by Argentina since its discovery in 2010, holds an estimated reserve of 1.7 billion barrels of crude oil. Through his Instagram post, Milei sought to politically capitalize on the withdrawal of one of the world’s largest oilfield service providers from this coveted project.
