Santiago Caputo Says the Malvinas Sovereignty Dispute Is a Cause for the Entire Western World (English version)
The presidential adviser argued that the loss of identity in the United Kingdom poses a geopolitical threat, claiming that the campaign for sovereignty over the southern Atlantic islands transcends national borders to become a pillar of defense for the entire Western world.
Buenos Aires, Saturday, October 17 (PR/26) — Presidential adviser Santiago Caputo has sparked international debate over sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands, asserting that recovering them is a fundamental strategic move in response to what he described as a United Kingdom being “colonized by Islam.”
In a series of reflections shared on social media, the official emphasized that Britain has historically been the birthplace of modern Western civilization. He recalled that, from the Magna Carta onward, the principal institutions of liberal democracies have been built upon the tradition of Anglo-Saxon constitutionalism.
To support his position, he highlighted the importance of leading thinkers and scientists from the region. In philosophy and political economy, he cited figures such as Adam Smith, John Locke, John Stuart Mill, Hume, Russell, and Hobbes, as well as Newton, Darwin, and Turing for their contributions to scientific progress.
Caputo stressed that the vast majority of the ideas and institutions that shape and explain the modern Western world originated in England or Scotland. He therefore warned that the cultural and religious transformation taking place in that territory directly affects all countries aligned with Western values.
A Strategic Threat to the Western Cause
Against this backdrop, Caputo warned that witnessing the United Kingdom undergo this process represents not only an imminent risk to the West but also a profound historical tragedy for those who defend the ideals of freedom.
Based on this assessment, the presidential adviser directly linked the situation in Britain to Argentina’s foreign policy, stating: “This is another reason why Argentina must project its power firmly into the South Atlantic and recover the Malvinas Islands.”
He also explained that, given the enormous strategic and geopolitical importance, the southern maritime region is expected to assume in the coming decades, the Western international community cannot afford to allow the interference or presence of an Islamic state in this key sphere of influence.
In this regard, he summed up Argentina’s position with a forceful statement about the global significance of its peaceful claim: “Recovering the Malvinas is not merely a national cause. It is a cause of the West,” underscoring the opposing perspectives of the two countries.
Diplomatic Initiatives and the Context of the Debate
Caputo’s remarks were based on a video circulated by journalist Javier Negre, owner of La Derecha Diario. The footage showed British official Sagal Abdi-Wali, who is of Somali origin, taking her oath of office on the Quran. The post was subsequently shared by President Javier Milei.
The statement came amid heightened diplomatic tensions, shortly after the Argentine government confirmed that it had filed a submission with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, seeking the suspension of what it considers illegitimate oil exploitation in the North Malvinas Basin.
The legal strategy aims to immediately halt oil companies’ projects in the waters surrounding the islands. Meanwhile, legislative debate has resumed in Argentina’s National Congress, and calls are mounting for the relevant committees to issue final reports.
